Laws Regarding Window Tinting in Nevada

Many vehicle owners choose to get the windows on their cars or trucks tinted, and for many different reasons, such as privacy preferences or comfort control for the passengers. This is especially true for the residents of the state of Nevada, where summer temperatures can soar higher than 110 degrees. In instances like this it is easy to see why people choose to have their vehicles windows tinted.

It is important that Nevada residents are aware of the legal ramifications of having their vehicle windows tinted though, as there are strict laws with regards to how dark or reflective a tint can be. State regulations provide specific boundaries which must be adhered to by vehicle owners, and as such they should become familiar with them prior to having tint applied to windows. The State of Nevada’s laws with regards to window tinting were brought into place in 1993, and are as follows:

Tint which is non-reflective is permitted on the front windshield of the vehicle, providing it is above the manufacturers AS1 line. No other tinting is allowed on the front windshield other than this. The visible light transmission (VLT) of the passenger windows at the front of a vehicle is restricted to 35%, which means that at least 35% of light must be allowed through. It is the breaking of this law which accounts for the majority of traffic citations and stops in Nevada, so ensuring that your vehicles tinting is within these legal limits is of paramount importance if you want to avoid getting pulled over.

With regards to the rear window and the side back windows, there is no limit as to how dark these windows can be, and no legal limits on the window tint used.

There are some window tint films which, like the lenses on sunglasses, contain elements which are metallic and which help to reduce the heat and glare that visible light generates, as well as reflecting the light which is allowed through the windows.

There are no legal limitations as to the reflectivity of window tinting in Nevada, and both the front and the back side windows have no current laws regarding this.

There are some exceptions to the regulations and rules of Nevada’s tinting laws, such as:

Certification by manufacturers – Window tinting film needs to be certified by its manufacturer. This makes it important that vehicle owners check with their dealer that certified tinting film is being used.

Mirrors – If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, it is a legal requirement that side mirrors are fitted to both sides of the vehicle.

Color Restrictions – While some states, such as Florida, have no restrictions as to the color of window film used, the window tinting Las Vegas and Nevada law requires that amber or red colors are not used.

Medical Exemptions – There are some exemptions with regards to medical reasons for special window tint to be used. In this instance it is recommended that state laws are consulted so that specific terms are understood.
